Why Pegmatites Matter in Lithium Exploration
Our geologists are searching for spodumene — a lithium-bearing mineral found in pegmatite, the bright, often white rock that cuts through granite and schist (layered rock shaped by heat and pressure). The best places to spot it are rock outcrops and old artisanal mines that trace mineral veins underground.
To find lithium, you start with spodumene — and that begins with pegmatite. That's what our field teams are mapping and sampling across Atlantico's Novo Cruzeiro Project.
Spot the Pegmatites
Apply what you've learned. In the first two photos, notice large white pegmatite bodies in artisanal tunnels. The third photo shows thinner, stacked bands in schist; the fourth is a weathered pegmatite at surface—still worth sampling.

Pegmatites Under UV Light
Inside several artisanal tunnels we observe pegmatite veins underground. Geologists use UV light to highlight accessory minerals whose fluorescence can align with lithium-enriched sections.

Artisanal Mine Discoveries
Historic hand-dug galleries followed pegmatite veins to surface. For us, these exposures are useful field observations that help guide mapping, sampling, and early geological interpretation.

Pegmatites & Pegmatoid Bodies
Pegmatites can host spodumene and therefore lithium. We map thickness, continuity, orientation to vector toward the best zones—then confirm with assays.

Stream & Sediment Samples
Creeks carry signals from upstream. Anomalies in Li (with Cs, Rb, Ta) help trace back to the likely pegmatite source.

Granite Systems & Host Rocks
As granitic melts evolve, late fluids form pegmatites. Understanding this plumbing and fertility predicts where the largest bodies may occur.

Saprolite & Alteration Zones
Tropical weathering creates saprolite that can mask hard-rock pegmatites but also highlights colour/texture contrasts that guide mapping.
